Spirit, Courage & Resolve: A Special Olympics Athlete’s Road to Gold

An unexpected chapter was inserted into Tom and Karen Lambke’s storybook romance. The long-awaited birth of their first child turned quickly from joy to shock when they learned their new son Bryan had Down syndrome. Their understandable dismay soon gave way to the unconditional love that has permeated their lives ever since. Bryan came to share his father’s avid interest in sports and, at age eight, competed for the first time in the track and field events of the Special Olympics. Fourteen years later, Bryan stood atop the winner’s platform, a gold medal winner at the International Special Olympics in Ireland. Tom and Bryan are both available for school visits.
